Chinese Industry Alliance Gains Class A Liaison Status at IEC for First Time

On May 12, 2026, according to the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), the Shenzhen 8K UHD Video Industry Cooperation Alliance (SUCA) has been officially approved as a Liaison A Organization to IEC/TC100, the International Electrotechnical Commission’s technical committee for audio, video, and multimedia systems and equipment. This marks the first time an industry organization registered in China’s mainland in the information technology field has gained such recognition from the IEC, signaling a breakthrough in integrating Chinese industry and standards bodies into the global standards governance system.

The results of a formal vote, initiated on February 13, 2026, and announced on April 10, 2026, met the IEC’s requirement of two-thirds approval from P-members. SUCA is now among only 15 global organizations — including the Audio Engineering Society (AES), Consumer Technology Association (CTA), and USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) — to hold this top-tier status. As a Liaison A Organization, SUCA enjoys significant privileges: access to all technical documents, the right to attend meetings, the ability to nominate experts and working group convenors, and the power to fast-track its existing technical documents into international standards.

Founded in 2020 and overseen by the Industry and Information Technology Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality, SUCA is chaired by Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. Its vice-chair members include HiSilicon, TCL CSOT, Skyworth, Tencent, Shenzhen Media Group, Konka, ZTE, Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, BOE, and UGREEN. SUCA’s secretariat is based at CESI (Shenzhen) Electronic Information Product Standardization Engineering Center Co., Ltd. With over 130 member companies covering the entire 8K UHD industrial chain — from chips and displays to transmission, content, testing, and applications — the alliance has published more than 50 sector and association standards in areas such as visual health, commercial displays, and virtual reality.

A standout achievement is the General Purpose Multimedia Interface (GPMI) technology, which enables seamless ultra-high-definition audio-visual experiences across multiple scenarios using a single cable. GPMI 1.0 was officially released at the end of 2024 and is now in full commercial deployment. At the end of 2025, the GPMI series of electronic sector standards was formally approved, marking a significant step forward in high-speed multimedia interface core technologies.

SUCA’s recognition as an IEC/TC100 Liaison A Organization means European companies should acknowledge the growing influence of Chinese industry bodies in international standard-setting. The GPMI interface standard, led by SUCA, has been commercially deployed in China and may become an international standard via the IEC fast-track procedure. European firms entering the Chinese market would benefit from engaging with SUCA’s standard system to reduce adaptation costs and seize collaboration opportunities.
