From July 9 to 10, the 2025 Qingdao Forum on International Standardization was successfully held at Qingdao, Shandong province. The event brought together leading figures from the international standardization community, including Mr. Jo Cops, President of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC); Mr. Sergio Mujica, Secretary-General of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO); and Mr. Renaud de Barbuat, President and CEO of of GS1 Barcode Global Office, etc.,. All three delivered keynote speeches at the opening ceremony.
Senior officials from national standardization bodies from countries such as Germany and Uzbekistan also participated in the forum. Mr. Deng Zhiyong, Vice Administrator of the State Administration for Market Regulation and Director of the National Standardization Administration of China, attended the event.
Representatives from leading institutions and enterprises including Tsinghua University, the China Electronics Standardization Institute (CESI), and Hisense, gave presentations on the forum’s theme.
With the theme “High-Level Standards Driving High-Quality Development,” the forum featured the release of the Qingdao Initiative on Strengthening Standardization Cooperation among the Shanghai Cooperation Organization National Standardization Bodies. It also marked the official launch of the International Standardization Youth Star Competition and the Qingdao International Standardization Service Station. In addition, ceremonies were held for the release of foreign language versions of China’s national standards and the Chinese edition of the ISO Standards Exploration Game.
The forum also featured five parallel forums, focusing on the following topics:
- Standardization talent cultivation and capacity building;
- Standardization of new energy and diversified DC applications;
- Standardization-driven high-quality development of the low-altitude economy;
- “AI + Standardization” initiatives to foster future industries; and
- Empowering green and low-carbon industrial transformation through standardization.
Numerous domestic and international guests shared the latest concepts and research outcomes in their respective fields of standardization, contributing ideas and suggestions to help Shandong province promote the development of new quality productive forces and build an innovation-driven industrial system through standardization.
In recent years, Shandong Province has vigorously implemented a standardization strategy and has been actively advancing the national pilot program for innovative development of standardization. The province has improved the working mechanism of its leading group for standardization strategy, established a high-level expert advisory committee on standardization, and issued regulatory documents such as local standard management measures. It has proactively undertaken national reforms related to local standards, strengthened efforts in key standardization research areas, and launched the development of a platform for transforming scientific and technological innovations into standards, ensuring coordinated progress in technology R&D, patent creation, and standard formulation.
Since 2017, the Qingdao Forum on International Standardization has been held four successful times. It has become a prestigious and high-level international standardization event in China and a premium platform for exchange. The forum plays a key role in building consensus, expanding openness, and using standards to connect and promote international cooperation in industrial technologies. It has significantly facilitated mutual learning and exchanges in international standardization, strengthened consensus on global standardization cooperation, enhanced the international influence of Chinese standards, and contributed meaningfully to advancing rules-based opening through standards.
