On August 27, 2025, the 7th China-ASEAN Cooperation Dialogue on Automotive Standards and Regulations was convened in Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, yielding fruitful outcomes of exchanges and cooperation in automotive standardization between the two sides. During the dialogue, China and ASEAN completed the second round of exchanging their respective lists of electric vehicle (EV) standards, which included 139 Chinese EV standards and 95 ASEAN EV standards.

This outcome not only marks the substantive implementation of regular standardization cooperation between the two sides but also establishes a solid standards bridge for collaboration in the automotive sector where the transparency and alignment of EV standards and regulations between China and ASEAN will improve. Moreover, by exchanging standards lists, enterprises from both sides are able to gain a clearer understanding of each other’s market access requirements and technical specifications, which leads to reduced trade barriers and technical thresholds and helps enterprises better plan their production and market strategies, improve product adaptability and competitiveness. This initiative significantly enhances China-ASEAN EV cooperation through resource sharing and complementary strengths, injecting robust momentum into the collaborative development of the automotive sector and accelerating regional EV adoption.

The event also released the “China-ASEAN Automotive Standardization Talent Development Action Plan” for the purpose of cultivating high-quality, internationalized professionals for the auto sector of both sides. As a part of this effort, China presented ASEAN representatives with over 60 foreign-language versions of Chinese EV standards and the English edition of the “Automotive Standardization” textbook, which cover the latest technologies and standardization knowledge in this sector. The aim of this plan is to establish a systematic standards promotion system that can help ASEAN countries comprehensively enhance their standardization capabilities.

Additionally, the event witnessed the official launch of two joint research initiatives: “Research on the EV Standard System in the ASEAN Region” and the “China-ASEAN Voluntary Technical Specification Project: EV Terminology”, which mark a shift in bilateral cooperation from general dialogue to thematic collaboration. By focusing on key technical areas of international automotive standardization, the initiatives will leverage complementary resources to support ASEAN countries in developing a more scientific and tailored EV standards framework. This collaboration is poised to advance global standardization synergy, boost the China-ASEAN automotive sector’s international competitiveness, and solidify the foundation for its sustained global expansion.
